I channel my love for music and club culture into a role I totally make up as I go along вЂ“ a party promoter, a DJ, a producer and songwriter. My chosen family is vast and creative and queer and unconventional, and social media begins to bring us even closer together on a global scale. But now we live in a new world where queens are all over the BBC, your mum loves Sam Smith and has an understanding of what it means be gender non-conforming, where Munroe Bergdorf is on the cover of every fashion magazine.ДЇast forward a few years, and IвЂ™m living in London, dressing in drag (because itвЂ™s the most out-there expression of my queerness, and I can get into clubs for free!) and IвЂ™m about to start DJing. This story isnвЂ™t unique вЂ“ while so many more families are open to their queer kids these days, mainly due to representation in the media, there are just as many who arenвЂ™t. I went back into my world of Ab Fab, dance music CDs and fashion magazines until I was old enough to truly bring my fantasies to life.

I just wasnвЂ™t really old enough to be a full-on part of it yet, and so the late-night sneaking out of windows and up to London was paused. When my father essentially disowned me, it didnвЂ™t matter вЂ“ IвЂ™d found myself, IвЂ™d found my tribe, and IвЂ™d started to develop a love for the world IвЂ™d uncovered where I belonged and where I could create a me that I loved. I went from being вЂњnot like anyone elseвЂќ to being a part of a community the moment I stepped through the doors with an excellent fake ID and butterflies in my stomach.

It was a big, queer space, playing the music I loved, packed full of people like me, and I cannot tell you how much I felt like IвЂ™d finally arrived home. I avoided being bullied (I was part of the tough-girl gang down the park smoking cigs), and really came into my own when I was slightly underage (by a good few years actually) and walked into a nightclub for the first time. These arenвЂ™t things that meant I was definitely going to be gay, but Jesus Christ IвЂ™m sure it was obvious I was probably going to be a screaming homosexual when I grew up.
